
The famous tourist destination, Pinnawala elephant orphanage is a nursery and a breeding ground of wild elephants established in 1975 by the Sri lanka department of Wild life conservation. The entire land expands for 25 acres. Thus this lovely orphanage can be visited within 13 km to the North West from Kegalla town, Sabaragamuwa province of Sri lanka.
The Pinnawala elephant orphanage is a home for about 88 elephants including 51 females and 37 males. Hence the orphanage has initiated to treat and look after the orphaned baby elephants, patriarchs and adult wild elephants that missed love, care and protection. Occasionally sequestered baby elephants from their herds are moved to the orphanage. Some of the baby elephants had lost their mother elephants due to accidents and poachers killings.
